Epic Games has announced significant changes to Quixel Megascans, its renowned library of 3D assets and textures, widely used by game developers, filmmakers, and artists. As of 2024, Megascans will no longer be free for Unreal Engine users, a decision tied to the upcoming launch of Fab, Epic’s new integrated content marketplace.
Fab aims to unify various digital asset libraries like the Unreal Engine Marketplace, ArtStation, and Sketchfab into one unique platform. While Megascans assets are currently free for Unreal Engine users, this will change after 2024 when Fab goes live. After this point, users will need to purchase individual assets or subscriptions to access them.

For those who want to retain access to the free Megascans assets before they go behind a paywall, there’s good news. A script developed by Jamie Phan allows users to quickly save the entire Megascans library to their accounts. This script automates the process of adding each asset individually, making it convenient to store the assets for future use.
By running this script, creators can save all current assets to their accounts before the transition to Fab. However, it’s not entirely clear whether these saved assets will be accessible after the platform switch in 2024, or if they will be fully transferable to Fab without additional cost.

Let’s hope that some assets remain free for a short time after Fab’s launch, but until then, using Phan’s script to secure all available assets is likely the best strategy to ensure continued access!
