Art Foundation Year 1: A Sneak Peek at What We Do

The Art Foundation module is a fast-paced exploration of artistic techniques, split into two cool but connected parts. It’s a trip that takes you from the familiar feel of pencil on paper to the digital world of Photoshop, all in the name of visual storytelling.

The module starts off by getting back to basics: sketching. Sure, mastering drawing is a lifelong gig, but these first sessions are a great chance to reconnect with the fundamentals. We’re talking shaded volumes and anatomy, encouraging you to explore the awesome shapes and forms you’ve got in your head. It’s not about becoming a photorealistic pro overnight, but more about unlocking your creative potential through core drawing skills. This back-to-basics approach sets you up for the digital adventures ahead.

The second part of the module dives headfirst into digital art, specifically environment design. You’ll be tasked with creating a believable but totally alien landscape in Photoshop. Think crazy spiky rocks, otherworldly plants, and a focal point that really grabs the viewer’s attention. You’ll start by creating a mood board – basically a collection of images and textures to get your creative juices flowing and guide your artistic direction. These initial ideas then become grayscale thumbnails – quick sketches that map out the composition, define the shapes and values, and set the lighting. These thumbnails are like a blueprint, letting you play around with different layouts and perspectives before settling on a final design.

The digital journey ends with the creation of a photobashed environment. This technique involves seamlessly blending a bunch of photos to create something completely new. It’s not just slapping pictures together; it’s about transforming them, weaving them together so the original elements become unrecognizable, forming a unique and believable scene. The result? A photorealistic version of your alien environment, the kind of thing you might see as a background in movies, TV shows, or game cinematics. So, the Art Foundation module gives you a well-rounded intro to key artistic principles, bridging the gap between traditional techniques and digital tools.
