The VFX Festival returns as a series of virtual events with one of the first being an inspiring talk by Marcelo Sousa, FX TD and Tiago Faria, Senior/Lead Compositor at Union VFX.

“Launching the Sea Dragon required numerous simulations and an intimate relationship between compositing and FX. This involved bouncing ideas and solutions of each other to solve problems and technical obstacles. In this talk Marcelo and Tiago will go into how doing such ensured they could focus on pushing the shot creatively while limiting the technical hurdles.”

Tiago Faria was one of my students here at Escape quite a few years ago and he studied on the 12 week full-time compositing course. He was one of the “front-row” students, the type who asks for critical feedback on his shots to make them better and pushes himself technically and artistically to get the most out of the learning. He also took on work on external short films to get a wider range of shots on his reels, something that we encourage students here to do while they study. This is the showreel that he put together back then, demonstrating some of his clean-up, keying, integration and advanced projection skills:

It was obviously not too hard for him to get a job with that and after a couple of short projects at Lola and Prime Focus he moved on to Union Visual Effects. He has stayed there for several years now and has moved up to a Lead/Senior Compositor position with 38 different film/TV credits on his IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5779687/. Coincidentally, that same evening at Thursday, 21st at 5pm, I will be delivering a free one-hour taster for the Escape Studios Compositing course. I will be showing a production shot from a charity project that Escapees (Escape students and graduates) created for the Great Ormond Street Hospital – Superhope:

I will demonstrate some of the basic compositing techniques – clean-up, projections, sky-replacement and CG Integration – and if you follow up with our admissions team afterwards, you can get the assets and Nuke script to play around with as well.
