“The Rule of Thirds” – and PreVis – with Sagar Rathod – Part 2

Welcome back to part 2 of this tutorial demonstrating how to animate a camera move in Maya, using the rule of thirds as guide for composition.

The basic worflow is too, first find your camera start positon, and frame your subject. Set a key and then move your camera to the second position, framing your character. So essential we have only two keys in translate.

However we quickly see that out subject matter is not in frame through out the animation..and veers away from the 1st third in this example.

The solution is Tilt and Pan.

To pan means rotating horizontally while maintaining a fixed position. The pan motion is similar to the motion of moving the head left or right. To tilt means rotating vertically up and down while maintaining a fixed position.

So now we set keys in ONLY the x and y rotations, to keep our subject matter nicley in frame!
